This year, fans were faced with a whole new world on "Grey's Anatomy." Shonda Rhimes broke the hearts of many girls (let's face it, maybe even some guys, too) when she made the creative decision to kill off Derek Sheperd.
We were all thinking it while watching the episode: there is no way he is going to die. He's survived a shooting, a plane crash, and just about everything else we can think, and he gets killed by a car crash. Seriously Shonda?
While this seems like the end of the world for many viewers, I think this now give "Grey's" the type of edge that it didn't have before. As much I too loved McDreamy, with Derek gone, it shines a light on so many different plots and allows other characters to be showcased.
Christina said it best when she left, "He is not the sun, you are." With Derek off the show, this statement can really ring true to Meredith. She can strive in everything she does without feeling like she is holding Derek back or that he is holding her back. In the first three episodes already, Meredith has become an even more powerful woman than she was before. Not only is she teaching an anatomy class, she also is now the chief of general surgery. Unlike her mother, she has become so focused on her work and kids, which makes her an admirable character to look up to. She has also moved in with her sisters, Amelia and Maggie, if this doesn't say something about girl power, then I don't know what does.
Not only does Meredith benefit from McDreamy's timely departure, but so does Amelia. Amelia has always been in the shadow of her big brother. There had been multiple times when people have denounced her abilities when compared to Derek's. Now, she can strive and conquer anything that comes her way because there will be no one to compare her too, which I think is kinda wonderful.
There's no doubt. I loved Derek—I mean, who wouldn't? But I think his death was essential to take the show in a new direction, and I'm all about the girl power that has been shown in this season so far.
