Memorial Day, More Than Just A Day Off

Memorial day is so often overlooked or taken for granted, but that doesn't mean it's not important.

Maybe Memorial day is just a day off work or school to you, but if you look a little closer you will see it is so much more than that. It is a day commemorated to recognize those who served and who are serving our country all over the world. So, show some respect, America.

The freedoms you enjoy are not free. Men and women all over the world put their lives on the line so that you can sleep safe and sound at night. They sacrifice so much so that you can live in a country where you don't have to fear the horrors and atrocities they witness on a regular basis.

One of my favorite country songs is called "American Soldier." In it, the reason men and women in the Armed Forces do what they do is told through the eyes of a soldier. Their driving force is a gratitude for the country they live in and a desire to maintain it and its freedoms for the future generations. They selflessly put their lives on the line so that you don't have to live in a state of constant fear. They stand up and fight for you without expecting anything in return.

Having a father who serves in the military, I have gained a greater insight into the significance of the Armed Forces. They protect and defend this land, often giving up so much of their time and strength. Many often spend extended periods of time away from their families in foreign countries. Being away from your family is difficult, but they do it because they love their country and want to protect and defend those within it.

So show a little gratitude this Memorial Day. Take a few seconds to remember those who keep America the home of the free. This doesn't require anything grand on your part. When you see someone in a military uniform take a moment and thank them for what they do. They don't hear it near enough, and you might just make their day. Fly an American flag to show your pride for this amazing country you live in. Write a letter to a someone serving overseas.

We are so incredibly blessed to live in this country, let us not forget that. There are so many simple ways that you can express your appreciate for the incredible men and women who make this country what it is: the land of the free because of the brave.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
