Many people in today's world seem to lose focus of what the meaning of Memorial Day truly is. They seem to get caught up in the fact that there is no school or work. They see the three-day weekend on the calendar and decide it's the perfect weekend to throw a party. This article is to give a reality to check to those people. Memorial Day means so much more than that. The root word being memory should give that away. Memorial Day is a day to honor our fallen service men and women. To remember and mourn them for paying the ultimate price. They served their country and died doing so.
Not only did they make a great sacrifice, so did their families and friends. They hugged their beloved soldier and told them see ya later hoping and praying day after day that their soldier would come home someday soon. Until they got the dreaded news that their soldier went to their eternal home. They had prayed the ultimate sacrifice for us and America.
For many, summer will begin on Memorial weekend. Most will have their last day of school this week or the week before so naturally it’s the best weekend to kick off the summer. Typically, with your family and friends by throwing a barbeque or having a day at the beach or if you are from Texas Memorial weekend kicks off river floating season.
Being raised in a small town in the south we are raised to always respect our troops and to always shake their hand and thank them for laying their life down on the line for my freedom. Matter of fact one of the only times my hometown has ever made the news was for our stand to fly flags throughout town until every solider comes home. I feel as if our generation sometimes forgets how great of a sacrifice our troops make for us which leads to them forgetting the meaning of this holiday.
It is a day that is so hard for so many to get through as they remember their soldier, their family member or best friend, or someone they served with. A soldier that went to fight for our freedom and never made it back to American soil. A soldier that did make it back, but passed shortly after. A veteran that loved to tell his war stories and one who refuses to talk about his. Memorial Day should be spent honoring them. They paid the ultimate price for our freedom, so we owe them the utmost respect. So while you’re enjoying your weekend don’t only honor the fallen soldiers say a prayer for their family and friends too. While we’re having fun with our family and friends some are wishing they had one more day with theirs.
So while you are out enjoying your three-day weekend, do so in memory of the fallen soldiers and remember to always pray for our military men and women.
God Bless America.
