Meet The Writer: Kayla Adams

Five facts about me.

You know those blogs that are super dramatic and follow celebrity gossip and use words like "uber" to describe everything? Yeah, this isn't that. And you know those articles that you read that are incredibly political, where you don't know anything the writer is talking about, and they use extremely long words to explain things when they could have just said "very?" Yeah, this ain't that, either. I'm just a girl who likes to talk about stuff I think is interesting and stuff I think you'll like, too. I can be a little of both of those articles but what the hell? Ya know? But first, a few things you need to know about me:

1. I go to Monmouth College.

Pretty obvious, right? The Odyssey company is specific to certain schools, not a universal blog like BuzzFeed. Also, it probably says Monmouth in my bio. But for any readers who aren't particularly tech savvy or who don't attend Monmouth College, this one's for you.

2. I LOVE cartoons.

I am not ashamed. Other than trash reality television, I love to watch cartoons to pass the time. Mostly old animated movies like "Tarzan," "The Lion King," and "Rock-A-Doodle" (you might not know about that one). However, I like watching kinda quirky cartoons that come on today, like "Adventure Time" and "Teen Titans" (not to be mistaken with "Teen Titans Go!" which is pretty terrible).

3. I'm the president of an organization.

I'm a sophomore, but the president of a club on campus called Umoja, which translates to "unity" in Swahili. Wild, right? Our main goal is to promote unity on campus through the informing of African and African-American culture. So if you ever wanna check us out, we have meetings every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Pattee Auditorium. Everyone's welcome! (Gotta love the free advertising.)

4. YouTube is Life. Literally. OK, not literally. But seriously.

My obsession with YouTube is actually kinda unhealthy. I'm tryna ween myself off of it, but it can literally take my time for about five hours, non-stop. From vloggers like Shameless Maya to makeup gurus like Ms. Aaliyah Jay to storytellers like Tana Mongeau. With all of those, my time is always consumed with something. But I'm never bored. Ever.

5. I'm SO Chicago/Chi-Town/Windy City (NOT Chiraq).

Clearly, I'm from Chicago. But not everyone from Chicago IS Chicago, ya know? I love Chicago-style hot dogs and taking pictures by the Bean. I love to view the city from a different lens by taking the 'L' from 79th to Lincoln Park and getting off to shop for a bit on State Street. I LOVE Chicago, and there's no place I would rather be from.

I hope that you guys consider us best friends after this! Or at least I hope you know a little more about me than you did before. You'll get to know me more the more I write. I hope you follow me on my journey, and feel free to hit me up on Facebook. Share and leave comments, peace!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
