James writes:
"THE SECRETS OUT.. so beyond excited to finally announce that I am the new face of #COVERGIRLand the first ever coverBOY. 😱 I am so thankful and excited and cannot wait to show you all what we have in store. Make sure you go check out@covergirl on Instagram for more in"
What Do I Think?
I love that Covergirl has added James Charles as a new "CoverBoy." I think this is an essential and progressive change within society. However, in his intro video he announces himself at a "CoverGirl" not a CoverBoy, which makes me think this is what he would be preferred to be called. Instead, an issue is created here where James does not seem to identify transgender but he has a feminine identity. Before designing headlines that labeled James a CoverBoy, I think they should have asked James what he wanted to labelled as CoverGirl or CoverBoy? But, nonetheless I feel this is an extremely positive change for our society, Covergirl is such and iconic brand and this change will reach millions of people and perhaps change their views of the LGBTQ community, the gender binary system, and trans people.
Oh and James is absolutely beautiful!
A Boy In Make-up: Drag Queen?
No, James is not a Drag Queen, though the articles I've read about him do not discuss his gender identity or his orientation, he is not a drag queen nor does he claim to be one/identify as one. From what I've learned, a Drag Queen is designed to be a parody on gender, a highly glamorous (man or woman) who dresses over-the-top as a diva, and preforms with this as a costume--their Drag Queen identities are separate from who they identify as in real life, Drag is simply a costume, a dual-persona. Most importantly, the article quotes a Drag Queen who says that Drag is whatever they want it to be and a Drag Queen identifies as Drag. The difference being that James does not identify as a Drag Queen, though he is pretty glamourous, he is not Drag. His gender expression is feminine however, though this is not an act or a character he plays, it is who he is and the expression his identity. Drag Queen's are performers who do not identify with the persona character that is their Drag Queen costume, James is being himself, expressing his true identity, not preforming or acting.
