I can remember the exact day when I first saw a preview for “Me Before You.” I was browsing Facebook for the fun of it when I stumbled upon a clip for the preview, deciding to watch it because, why not? I instantly fell in love and couldn’t wait to see this film! I eagerly bought the book, read it all within two short days and anxiously counted down the days until the film came out. And wow, this highly anticipated summer movie did not disappoint. From the actors, the scenery, the British accents, the soundtrack, the unique wardrobe styles, this movie was the bee’s knees (not trying to reference the bumblebee tights or anything).
One thing I was slightly shocked by, yet pleased nonetheless, was the accuracy of the movie to the book written by JoJo Moyes. The plot followed the book almost completely step by step. Minus a couple of minor details, the movie included all key parts while also incorporating small yet pleasing details and quotes. That was another thing I thoroughly enjoyed. The movie kept in many of the lines directly from the book, even ones I wasn’t expecting to be so exact. As a book lover, I notice and appreciate those small additions.
On top of that, I couldn’t have picked a better cast myself. Each actor portrayed his or her character so similar to the book version that I was very pleased with the outcome. Emilia Clarke was so incredibly good at playing Louisa Clark. She easily incorporated Lou’s sense of style, quirkiness and enthusiasm in such a believable manner. Along with Emilia Clarke’s performance, I was also pleased with Sam Claflin, who played Will Traynor, and his performance. Both actors, as well as the rest of the cast, I believe truly brought the book to life with their realistic performances.
The soundtrack was another surprisingly fantastic thing about the movie. I really enjoyed “Unsteady – Erich Lee Gravity Remix” by X Ambassadors and “Photograph” by Ed Sheeran in the previews, so I was extremely happy to hear them in the actual movie as well. Those additions were fantastic, happy additions from the previews to the movie.
I think my favorite thing about both the book and the movie was the message behind it: live boldly. I loved that Will’s disability and eventually his death were the things that showed Lou she deserves to live a good and full life. I think reading the book or watching the movie allows viewers to appreciate their own lives, as well as giving them the desire to live life as best they can.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone and everyone! However, make sure you bring your tissues because it is definitely a tearjerker. Basically the entire ending I was in full tears. However, it’s a beautiful and moving story that did not disappoint. I think everyone will leave the theater tearful, smiling and happy about their own lives. Remember, live boldly!
