Maybe Life Doesn't Suck

Eileen has lost her job. She has been eating ramen noodles and skipping out on her morning coffee for a month, does it get better?

The phone began to ring just a she pulled on her pants.

“AH!” Eileen had been waiting on a phone call for three days. Three. Whole. Days. She lunged for the receiver and fell gracefully to the floor.

“Shit, shit, shit..” She managed to scramble to her feet and grab the phone. She had been out of a job for about a month, and her savings were dwindling. This phone call meant the difference between ramen noodles and a nice home cooked meal.

“HI…. Yes, this is Eileen… Oh I am doing great. How are you!?... Yes, I am available whenever you need me.. Of course I can! Thank you so much!.. Uh-huh, you too!!” She slammed the phone onto the table and let out a happy cry. She jumped to her feet and ran to play some music. The Lumineers leaked out of her speakers and she danced around her apartment looking for a shirt to wear.

The coffee shop she stopped by every morning, before she lost her job, was full. People filled all the chairs and stood around drinking their coffee on this leisurely Sunday morning. Her shirt was loose, pink, had hearts sketched on it, and a small coffee stain from the last coffee she’d had in this shirt. The grin she wore was from ear-to-ear and could blind a person easily if they were to pay enough attention.

“I’ll have a simple vanilla latte please.” She said when the line reached her. The barista smiled when Eileen handed her a twenty and told her to keep the change. Today is the start of something new, she thought to herself. She walked down the street and hummed to herself, set on enjoying this day. Then it started to rain. The sun was shining down on the streets and out of the blue sky droplets began to fall. She looked around for the cloud and let out a laugh when she saw the dark mass looming over her city. There is nothing more Eileen loves than a good rainstorm and it was the perfect thing on her already happy day.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
