Mandy Harvey. Remember that name because I promise you, she’ll make you rethink the way music is made.
If you use Facebook you have definitely come across some America’s Got Talent acts and auditions at one point or another. The TV show which is currently in it’s twelfth season captivates it’s viewers with amazing acts and talents from various people all over America.
While there have been many auditions and acts that have caught my attention this season, Mandy is definitely the one I want to go all the way, and allow me to explain why!
What made Mandy unique to me was a variety of different things. For starters, at the age of 18 she lost all of her hearing due to her nerves deteriorating because of a connective tissue disorder. Mandy had actually went to school for vocal music education but left after losing her hearing. Can you imagine music without ever hearing it? Well Mandy didn’t allow that bump in the road stop her from chasing her dream. With the help of visual tuners, muscle memory, and her sense of touch, she taught herself how to sing without the need of hearing. She used the visual tuners and her judgement to help get the right pitch, and her sense of touch to feel the vibrations of the tempo in the floor. But it doesn’t stop there! Along with relearning how to sing, she plays the ukulele and writes her own music. Her original song ‘Try’ tells the difficult time she went through and to never give up. I can’t gloat enough about this girl, so if you haven’t already, watch her audition!
Amazing right?!
Of course the internet is never happy, so there is a lot of debate on America’s Got Talent in regards to ‘sob stories’. Basically if a person who’s auditioning tells a sad story of their life, they’ll gain the judges sympathy and move forward. While I understand where they are coming from, I disagree in this case. Do I believe a few of the people auditioning did that? Yes. BUT I don’t believe Mandy was one of them. Simon simply asked her about her backstory and she gave it. She didn’t start with her story off the bat, she didn’t think of herself any higher just because she could sing without hearing, she was simply being honest and answering Simon. Her story is sad, but it's genuine. Honestly, I would like to see everyone who says she gave a sob story, go through what she has and do what she does. I promise most of them would crash and burn. She has such an amazing talent and thrives to keep chasing her dream even after being dealt with a really difficult obstacle. Mandy has earned my respect and my vote!
Above all, I wish Mandy could hear how beautiful she sounds because she has such an amazing voice and can't even hear it. It's almost not fair! But as she once said, “It’s not the dream that I always had, but that’s okay because I showed up and I did something I never believed I could do.”
Continue to chase this dream Mandy, I'm rooting and voting for you!
