Recently I saw "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again", the movie that all of us Dynamos have been waiting for for the past ten years. If you're a true die-hard "Mamma Mia" or just musical fanatic in general then you were probably thrilled with the entire production as I was. But since the long-awaited sequel came out, I've seen bursts of criticism. So here I am to clear up why "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" deserves little if no hate at all.
DISCLAIMER: There are some spoilers in this article, so proceed at your own risk!
1. Let’s talk originality, because when have we ever had an at least decent sequel with a plot that isn’t basically the exact same as its prequel?
This film is not only bursting with originality in the plot but it's also a completely original perspective of our beloved island, Kalokairi and, more importantly, the legend which Kalokairi hosts, Donna.
2. We were introduced to new characters and still none of the previous characters were forgotten or left without any mention.
In fact, the whole plot of the movie was an elaboration of the original cast in order to expand on their pasts. The fact that the writers could incorporate that many characters' personalities and backgrounds, while still remaining relevant to the timeline is beyond impressive.
3. The cherished mother daughter relationship wasn’t left on the back burner even though Meryl Streep wasn’t starring in the movie.
While the entire plot was honoring young Donna's sex life and classic free spirit, a vital part of the movie was the fact that Sophie was working so hard to make her late mother proud and fulfill her dream of opening a hotel. Not to mention that Sophie was literally heartbroken the entire movie, yet she pushed through that in order to open up the Bella Donna hotel for her mom, and if that isn't an awesome mother-daughter relationship, I don't know what is.
4. ABBA is honored and presented to this generation in the most phenomenal way.
Because let's be honest, how many of us listened to any ABBA song, excluding Dancing Queen, before "Mamma Mia"? 'Nuff said.
5. Lastly, and most importantly to remember, is that this film is a musical by the very definition.
This musical isn't made to be comparable to many of the blockbusters that are currently out along with it. For example, the timeline and little details can't be completely flawless, otherwise, there would be boring or not as interesting scenes in the movie, which is exactly the opposite of entertaining. Just like any other fine art or theatrical performance, musicals are not meant to fill in the gaps, they're meant to entertain.
So, haters, before you go on with your comments about how 'over the top' or 'extra' "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" is, keep in mind that the grandness and unrealistic theatrics of musicals is what makes them so fabulous and is also what allows the original and beloved cast from ten years ago to live on in modern day entertainment.
