Tips And Tricks To Make Your College Room Actually Roomy

I decided to write this because it is hard sometimes in college to have a cute space when you're on a low budget and possibly when you're in a tiny cinderblock square. As well this semester coming back to school I am changing rooms in my house and I feel like over the last year and a half I have a better understanding of what is needed for your room so it doesn't feel like a prison.

1. Command Strips and Hooks

Shop for this item here.

I always ended up using more of these then I thought I would so, I would just go ahead and buy a few packs because they come in handy. Most colleges and houses at my college don't allow you to put holes in the walls and trust me you are going to want some pictures and decorations up.

2. A Chair

May seem weird but, if you have the room put one in. It is always so strange when people come over and you don't have a chair or bench to sit on. Are you going to say sit on the floor? My bed freshman year was lifted so it's not like that was easy and function for people to hang out on since you would have to climb a latter to get to it. So, again if possible buy something for you and your friends to chill on.

3. Mini Fridge

I don't know what your food situation is going to be like but I can tell you that it was so handy having a mini fridge in college. The dorm food was so gross and made us sick too often that we were often had a few groceries or leftovers in the fridge.

4. Art

You're going to want to put something on those sad white walls. I would recommend getting some art, lights, pictures, or decorations to brighten up your room. It doesn't have to be the most expensive thing ever, but it does help a lot. However, don't go overboard, your room is small so too much looks cluttered. Just put a few of your favorite pieces up.

5. Rugs

I would put a rug or two down in the center of your room to bring some color into your room and if it matched with your decor and pillows even better. A rug can help to lighten up space and to make you feel more at home and cozy. They can be a bit pricey but if you do a bit of searching you can find a good one out there in your price point. Sophomore year I actually found one from marshals that I loved and it was under $40.

6. Pillows

I think having a few fun pillows really help to pull your room together. I would discuss a color scheme with your roommates and then if everyone brought a decorative pillow or two you will be set.

7. Hanging mirror

don't forget this item. It may seem silly but, when you have a bunch of girls living together it is a must to have a full-length mirror to check out your outfit in the morning trust me it is a tight squeeze with everyone trying to be in the bathroom. Sophomore year we put my mirror on the back of the door so we could look at ourselves easily before we left the room, I'd recommend that as a good spot.

Other Advice:

- Stick to more neutral colors

- Work with mixing patterns instead of just solid colors

- Less is often better, you don't want a crowded and cluttered room

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
