So, you’ve finally made a decision about a major. You’re pretty confident with the decision so far. You’re prepared to register for classes that will no doubt informatively spark your interest. You’re also ready to go purchase the textbooks and start reading up on all the interesting things that go along with your decisions. You’re satisfied. Until someone else puts in their opinion.
They are beginning to start questioning your decision and give unwanted advice. Saying things like: “Is this your major?” “Are you sure this is what you should be doing?” “This major would fit you best…” “There's no money in that field.”
Everyone seems to have an opinion on the decisions you make. Eventually, too much unsolicited advice will start making you question your judgement. You begin to wonder if the decision your satisfied with is the right one for you. In many cases if you feel top much pressure then you will change your decision all together for something that you’re less satisfied with.
Here are five reasons why you shouldn’t compromise your major for money:
1. It’s Your Life.
Realize that the decisions you make regarding your career only affects you. Everyday someone is going to try to put their input in on what goes on in your life. If you listen to these people you will no longer be living your life but a life orchestrated by someone else. Eventually, you will not know your right from your left because you’re relying on someone to know it for you. Make you own decisions because in the end, you have to live with them.
2. Statistics is just that.
The majority of the biggest decisions made are influenced by money. Numbers are placed on any and everything. From birth date to ranking, numbers have a way of influencing the decisions that we make. Statistics state that the highest grossing fields are engineering, computer science and medicine, to name a few. Does this mean that anyone who studies outside of these fields will not make anywhere near the same salary as those that are? No, first of all statistics is sometimes exaggerated and there could always be exceptions. Statistics say that men fall in love faster than women, so will that mean that women can’t fall in love before their male partners? No, one person can make a difference. You could be that difference.
3. Happiness versus Misery.
Money doesn’t by happiness. The having and the lack of having actually causes problems that could affect your day to day living. In the end money, doesn’t matter. Yes, it is important for major life needs like food, housing and clothing, but money emotionally doesn’t influence anything but stress. If you chose to make every life decision be based on whether there was a high chance of getting maximum gains, then you’ll be spending your life unhappy. Stop making decisions based on money but on what YOU want.
4. Confidence.
If you're confident with the decisions that you make regarding your major, then stick with. Losing confidence in your decision because of certain aspects will make you doubt your future decisions. Be confident in yourself. If you really love your major and can’t wait to start your career, then that confidence alone will make sure that you will be successful in even the smallest fields.
5. Regret.
Chasing money isn’t the best way to go about life. After a while you will have too much of it and you will begin to exhaust your energy working in a career you were never fit for. Don’t set yourself up to regret the decisions you made because you were listening to those around you.
No matter which direction you go with career wise it is important that you’re happy where you end up. If you put much effort into it then you will get much out of it. Don’t lose faith in the decisions you make. Trust that you know what is best for you. No one knows your wants like you do. Whether it be family, friends, or strangers, don’t let them impact you because their motivated by money and not passion. Have faith that where you want to be is where you need to be.
“We are at our very best, and we are happiest, when we are fully engaged in work we enjoy on the journey toward the goal we've established for ourselves. It gives meaning to our time off and comfort to our sleep. It makes everything else in life so wonderful, so worthwhile.” ~Earl Nightingale
