A year ago from now I believed that I would pursue computer science as my major. You know, it is one of the most sought out careers nowadays. Every field and industry utilizes technology is some manner and hey it does not hurt that certain jobs pertaining with computer science earns good pay. I already took a class for computer science back in high school but it was all online because my school was not current with the times. Anyways, I passed the class and I thought I needed a major when entering college. Case in point, I chose computer science.
Let us fast forward to the present day and reflect on what a year has taught me. I realized that maybe computer science is harder than it looks. Because my high school class for computer science was all online, I really did not have a teacher or peers to learn from. I was given the material and assignments to do but had to learn how to code without feedback or guidance. Here I am currently struggling to understand the material and execute my programs. I have already discussed with one of my professors about my situation and he assured me that for most beginners to computer science, it takes till the middle of sophomore year for everything to click. However, me being me, I do not have the patience to wait till sophomore year to see if the material actually clicks. My worst fear is that it never does and I'm stuck with a major I am not good at.
I keep on telling myself to BREATHE! It is not the end of the world if I decide to change majors. Already a few classmates who believed they were cut out for computer science had dropped the class and are pursuing other majors. It is not too late at this point to change majors and the college actually helps you through the whole process. I have my advisor to sit down and discuss my future classes and plans. And if anyone is worried about possible career opportunities for other majors then the school offers a career center to talk to staff who are familiar with majors lining up with jobs.
In a few weeks I have to sit down with my advisor and talk about classes for the fall semester. I have the chance to make computer science into a minor because I already have twelve credits for it and need eighteen for a minor. Because I am always prepared, I took three classes for marketing and advertisement on top of my two classes for computer science to see if I would be interested in a marketing and advertisement major. I could also do a double major with the two because I am one not to give up quickly.
I know that your future seems scary when it comes to college and majors but honestly you are not in the boat alone. Endicott College always opportunities for people to change majors so do not feel like you are trapped within your major.
