“I have so many papers to write.”
“I have so many problem sets due.”
“I have so many lab reports due.”
"My major is the hardest one."
Students have great pride in what they study. It is natural considering it is what they are passionate in. Although, some students feel the need to project themselves as greater than their classmates since their major is “harder” or “better” than another student’s. Of course it is OK to love what you study and have great pride in it; however, once you start bragging about how difficult it is or how great of a major it is, I think I speak for most when I say “stop.”
First, there is no need for the feud between humanities, sciences, and engineering. Some of us can write, some of us can discover, and some of us can design. No need for the derogatory classifying of “arts and crafts” or “Lego builders” because in the end, we are all going to get a degree when we graduate. But please, don't tell anyone their study won't get them a job. Our passions, strengths, skills, and weaknesses are all different, but we should appreciate the different types of people in our school. I help my humanities friend with calculus while she helps me construct a paper. So having different majors is an incredibly great thing, considering we can all help each other learn.
However, what really gets me to me is when students believe they themselves are superior to others because of their major. I cannot go on Facebook without seeing some type of bragging. Some people are so egocentric and expect other people to care about how great they are and how hard they are working. Although I am glad people are working hard to achieve their goals, there is no need for them to broadcast themselves constantly and expecting praise every single time.
Here is a Tweet expressing my thoughts on those who brag about their major on Facebook along with agreement from friends
To those who brag about their major through social media:
Wow, you are double majoring and triple minoring? I’m so fascinated. I wish I was as smart and cool as you. I just love seeing all your Facebook posts about how challenging your major is in all your intro classes. Your finals are definitely harder because of your major.
I am sure that nearly everyone is also struggling with their finals as much as you are. You don’t have to go out of your way to let everyone know how hard you are working or act as if your major is harder than mine, or anyone else’s. I’m sorry my major doesn’t have 50 words in the name like yours. So please stop being so extra and just focus on succeeding. I promise you that letting your success speak rather than annoying Facebook posts will triumph in the end.
So the next time I see you post about how difficult your college life is and how challenging your major is that “only a few students are even attempting,” please remember that my friends and I will be laughing at how ridiculous you sound. Stay humble, kids.
