Developing A Relationship With God

Maintaining Your Faith
Canadian Reformed Theological Seminar

Say goodbye to long nights, tropical days, and digging your toes in the sand because fall semester is just around the corner.

If you are a freshman and have a relationship with God, starting college can be a scary place to think about. So many questions could be running through your mind like "will I have any friends?" "what if nobody likes me?" and "will I meet anybody who I can share my faith with ?" Not only that but you are put in a new environment with unfamiliar surroundings, which could make sharing your faith potentially harder.

So you may ask yourself, how do I maintain a relationship with God in a place full of lost people ?

Here are a few 5 steps how:

1. Plug Yourself into Campus Ministries

During the opening week of your University, more than likely your school will have a street fair and there you will see tons of clubs to join as well as different ministries your campus has to offer

2. Read Your Bible

I know this could be hard to do every day but begin just reading a couple verses three times a week and eventually every day. I recommend getting into the word in the morning because you are fueling yourself with the truth, so you start your day with a clear mind. This will also give you the motivation you need to share the gospel by telling your friends what you have done that day.

3. Listen to Sermons

This one took me awhile to start doing but once I got into the habit of doing it, I found it very refreshing and uplifting. Listening to sermons has helped me better grasp scripture in a new perspective in my time alone with God. Below are a few pastors I personally enjoy listening to:

JD Greear

Steven Furtick

Joyce Meyer

John Piper

4. Pray

When you pray, you have a connection with God and your speaking with him directly. Pray when you are struggling with something as little as a test to personally struggles. Pray for others such as your family and friends. Pray to God when he blesses you or a miracle happens. Trust me, he will answer your prayers it might not be your timing but it will be God's timing.

5. Share Your Faith

This used to be so hard for me to do because I was worried people would judge me for my beliefs and would not accept me, but now I know God is enough. Remember you don't have to shove it downs people's throats because that will give people the wrong impression. Instead, talk about God's love and compassion this alone will lead to further conversations about God and lead to sharing the gospel.

These steps will guide you on how to maintain your faith on campus as well as building you relationship with God. When having a relationship with someone you want to spend time with them, talk to them, and tell everyone about them. These five steps alone has helped me survive college and has allowed me to maintain a good group of Christian friends.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
