I am quickly learning that few countries harbor the same enthusiasm for Halloween as the United States. I'm not entirely sure why that is, but it seems to me that whilst in the United States as soon as midnight hits on October 1st, everyone launches into a month-long campaign for the holiday decorating their homes, classrooms, stores, and anything and everything in between. Personally, I absolutely adore the holiday and as someone who's birthday is in October and as an avid fan of the "Tim Burton aesthetic" I tend to go all out for the "spoopiest" month of the year.
The same, however, cannot be said for Spain. Just this past week I have only begun to notice stores adding some pumpkin or skeleton flair to their windows and finding someplace that sells Halloween-related accessories was almost impossible. That being said, I still plan on dressing up for the holiday and although my resources are relatively limited, I managed to come up with a few ideas for low cost and no cost Halloween costumes.
1. Super-Shirted Heroes
You can easily adapt any super hero t-shirt that you already own and dress it up for a costume (black t-shirts are traditionally easier to match with so I'm using Batman as an example). Just wear black pants or a skirt, black shoes, and if you're really feeling bold, use a dark towel for a cape and either paint on or buy a black mask.
2. Suited Anything
Again, this one is all about the accessories. With just a simple black suit, or even just pairing a black jacket with dark pants and a white shirt, you can be almost any Quentin Tarantino character, the Men in Black, Barney Stinson from "How I Met Your Mother," Light Yagami from "Death Note," James Bond, the list goes on and on.
3. Onesie Characters
Depending on how easily accessible a onesie may be to you, one of the easiest and coziest costumes is just throwing on a onesie of your favorite animal or cartoon character (and you can still wear it for maximum warmth throughout the rest of fall and winter).
4. Utilizing Makeup
With even the most basic makeup, you can achieve some really fun and creative looks for Halloween! A few of my personal favorites include skeletons, "Black Swan", pop art caricatures, mermaids, KISS, and the classic spiderweb pattern.
But ultimately, whatever you decide to dress up as (or not dress up as) this Halloween, whether your idea of a fun night is handing out candy, trick-or-treating, going to a party, or just chilling at home with some popcorn and movies, have fun! Take a chance to "trick or TREAT" yourself!
