With summer coming to a close, I have been thinking about all the things that I have done in the last few months. I’ve gone on lots of trips and worked a ton of hours, but I didn’t get to do much else. This is sad because one of my favorite things to do in the summer (actually any time of the year) is curl up with a good book and read all day.
Reading is something that I have always enjoyed. Ever since I was little and everyone wanted to read every "Magic Tree House" book out there. I was that kid that would hog all the books, sit in the corner of the library and read till my eyes got tired.
It’s so hard for me to understand why people don’t like reading. It’s like TV in your head! You can go on adventures while staying in your pajamas all day. You can take your books with you anywhere, they don’t have a battery that can die, and let’s face it, they are so pretty to look at.
When people tell me that they don’t like reading because they think that books are boring, I just take that as you haven’t found the type of books that you like. There are so many different types of books out there, there has to be at least one that is suitable for everyone. If you just don’t like staring at a book for hours on end, you can get an audio version of your book. If you choose to listen to your books, you can listen to them while you are driving, cooking, cleaning, doing whatever you do. Books are so easy to access that it blows my mind that people look past them.
I feel like reading is one of the easiest things that we can do to keep ourselves informed and educated. With social media and everyday life, people make references to books and articles. I don’t know about you, but I hate feeling stupid or not understanding what someone is saying to me. So I do my best to read not only what I want to read, but classic books that people reference and that really are pertinent to our society today.
Another way reading helps you in your life. The more you read, the better you are at writing. When reading, you see more words, how to use new words, new sentence structures, examples of how to transition into new topics. Reading is just a great avenue for people to improve their writing, and writing is a huge deal in school and in a lot of careers. Managers and jobs like when you are a strong writer.
All in all, I just wish that reading wasn’t being phased out in this largely digital world. Reading is not only fun, but it can help you in the long run. I honestly encourage everyone that doesn’t like reading to go out there and skim through the library. I promise you there is something out there that you will like, and it is so worth discovering.
