Equality. A concept that we as Americans have fought so aggressively and passionately for. We have fought for the right of religious freedoms, racial privilege and the right to gay marriage. Despite the progress that we have made as a nation, there are still those who refuse to allow us the right of being ourselves or who cause us to hate ourselves by just existing. We as a people should never be ashamed to be who we are. We have the right to choose and it is not up for debate or judgement. Equality is a profound word in its simplicity but it’s not a concept in which would be accepted by people or one that could be executed overnight.
A part of my main premise is that we have progressed so far that it seems unfair that people wish to undo our progress. There is a bill in the making called the Anti-Gay Bill also known as the Religious Liberty Bill. It has been determined that the state of Georgia, specifically, the mayor has vetoed the bill. I believe that it’s commendable because it allows for the protection of the LGBTQ community. There will always people who are against the ideas of that particular community but it still allows them to be immersed into society without being treated like a social pariah. The bill if passed would lead to anyone that was homosexual to be ostracized, and it would make them unable to attain any necessities needed to sustain their lives.
The profound hatred of a group of people is what America has been founded on. The Native Americans, the African Americans and now the LGBTQ community. It needs to stop. People are not so different as we are all grounded from the same group/species because we are all human. We are all familiar with the concept of love and yet we refuse to understand that what is love to us is not what it means to other people. Love is not defined by gender. It has nothing to do with religion but everything to do with our emotions and the person who we are. If people would take the time to just understand then we could reach a certain point of realization and enlightenment that shows the progressive nature of our country, of our people and of our ideals.
I believe that equality or at least tolerance of the LGBTQ community is very attainable. However, it depends on how long we are willing to fight and how long we can, for some, refuse to see the issues that are right in front of us. I believe that we as a people have an idea of what human decency and acceptance means. If we use those concept to good use than we are able to sustain a civil, an understanding and a stable world. We need to let go of the definition of love and the assumption that is pertains to a man and woman. We also should rethink on the idea of what is deemed to be acceptable and unacceptable and redefine love and marriage so that the LGBTQ community is included rather than excluded based on their sexual orientation.
