13 Reasons to Love And Hate NYC

New York is one of the best cities in the world. Everything you could ever imagine can be found on the island of Manhattan. For people who haven't grown up in the city though it can be a huge adjustment. It's a dream place to live, but we are often found with a lot of things that we don't like about it. It's easy to find yourself in a love/hate relationship with the city that never sleeps.

1. Rude subway people: Hate

If you've lived here for at least six months you've had someone make an unsolicited comment to you on the subway. People in New York come right up to you and will call you fat, push you out of the way, let the subway door slam on your hand, and much more. This can be enough to drive away someone from the big apple.

2. Never running out of things to do: Love

It can be two o'clock in the afternoon and you can run to a yoga class, go for a walk to your local H&M, take a subway ride to Brooklyn and check out Williamsburg; the possibilities are endless. It's a cool city just to explore, and over time you go out you're guaranteed to notice something new.

3. The transportation expenses: Hate

A monthly MTA metrocard is $116 and forget about if you chose to take an Uber or taxi. It can be super expensive to keep up with transportation in New York City.

4. Everything is in walking distance: Love

Everything you actually need is in walking distance. There's a Duane Reade, bodega, and pizza place every three blocks. You don't have to go far to run your errands, which is major plus when you're in a super lazy mood5. Tourist in midtown: Hate

Midtown is basically the worst place ever if you go anywhere near Penn Station, Times Square or anywhere in that immediate area. They have some of the best shops and restaurants, but it's always crowded. Forget about during school breaks and Christmas time.

6. The smells: Hate/Love

Sometimes, especially while it's raining, the subway smells like straight up sh*t. While you're walking on the street every few blocks you'll get the overwhelming smell of God knows what, but sometimes you pass a restaurant or food stand and it smells like heaven. The smells of the city are really hit or miss.

7. Subway schedules: Hate

The subway always has construction going on and your train is constantly waiting around, so when you're going out prepare for a supposedly 10-minute commute turning into a 20 or 30 minute one.

8. The night life: Love

Like I said before, there's literally always something to do. You can go out and have a great time at a club on a Wednesday night and you would think it's a Saturday. If the club scene isn't you, there are endless concerts, sporting events, and other events.

9. You don't need a car: Love

Having a car can be expensive, and having a car in the city would be 10 times more expensive. Also, driving in the city is one of the worst things in the entire world, so it's better not to have a car here.

10. Crowded subways: Hate

At any given time the subway is super crowded. At times you wouldn't expect to be crowded, you can find subway cars packed in. Hopefully you won't be standing next to someone who forgot to put on deodorant that morning.

11. All the dogs: Love

When you see people walking their dogs it's one of the best parts of the day. You can't help to smile when a dog comes over to you on your walk to the train.

12. When the forecast calls for rain and you have to wear all your rain gear: Hate

Wearing or carrying around your rain jacket, boots and umbrella adds a few pounds. Your rain boots are not light and it's and even bigger drag if it doesn't rain and you brought everything for nothing.

13. Showing off the city to out of town friends: Love

You love bringing your friends into the city and showing off all the cool places you know in the city. You show off like a proud mom and you wouldn't leave NYC for anything

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
