Everyone has something they love to do. Whether it's artsy or more athletic, everyone has something that makes them happy. Up until a couple of months ago, I didn't have one special activity that I liked to do. Yeah, I liked walking the dog, writing and watching Netflix for hours, but none of those things made me super excited. I then found the emerging trend of sassy embroidery, and my life was complete. While embroidery is definitely linked with old women, you don't have to be an old woman to enjoy it.
Since last summer, I've been embroidering nonstop. Whenever I have free time I pick up a hoop with fabric and begin to embroider. It's a great activity to do while watching hours of Netflix because it feels like you're actually accomplishing something instead of just laying in bed. I don't even know what first compelled me to start embroidering. I had seen pictures of sassy embroidery all over the Internet, but I thought that I could never figure out how to do that. One day I was extremely bored and thought, why not? I was amazed at how simple it was to learn. I taught myself how to do most of the stitches, but there are tons of YouTube videos out there to show you how to do the basics. I found that I enjoyed having something fun and unique to create.
I also quickly realized that there is so many items to pick from that really make the piece your own. While you can easily copy a design from the Internet (I often do this because sometimes it's too much work to come up with something sassy by yourself), it's always nice to know that the hoop, the fabric and the thread is all unique to your piece. I can now spend hours in a fabric store. While that does sound lame, it's so much fun when you're really into it. It's amazing how many different fabrics there are. While I normally stick to cotton fabrics, it's still amazing how many different patterns you can find. While I have yet to order any off of Etsy, the website has tons and tons of cool patterns to pick from.
I enjoy creating my own T-shirts and sweatshirts, as well. While they may not look designer, they are still fun to make. It's fun to take a cheap sweatshirt or T-shirt (I get mine at Wal-Mart for around $3) and put something unique on it. You can be sure that nobody will be wearing the same outfit as you on days that you wear your embroidered shirts. One question I get a lot, however, is what am I going to do with so many finished embroidered squares. I decided to keep them all and later make a quilt out of my favorite ones. While embroidery may not seem super fun, it's a lot funner than it looks.
