Long Island At It’s Finest

Planning my week long spring break there was much to do, with my trip both starting and ending in Long Island there was about four days that I had to see all that it had to offer. Booking a very expensive ticket (because I am last minute kind of person) to Long island, I boarded from the Utica train station for around a four hour train ride on the Amtrak. The train ride was delayed coming into Utica and once on, was very long to say the least. However, the arrival at Penn Station was all but disappointing. I was being prepared weeks before I arrived, with foot races to and from the cafeteria on my college campus to ensure that I could make it among the top speed walkers that Penn Station produced. I am very happy to say that I did, having to get over my fear of escalators very quickly there is not a lot of time to catch your breathe once in the station. Rushing around the station we entered a lower part of Penn Station, with a massive board directing us towards the Long Island Railroad, the next train on our list. With it being around nineteen dollars per person it is a good deal for over an hour ride. With many different stops, the nineteen dollars could take you anywhere you would like to go. I arrived in the little part of Long Island that I was staying in, and I could not have been happier. The trip from start to finish was very tiring and long, with little Wi-Fi (which Amtrak should work on). Meeting my friend’s family was like a welcome home, a walk through the door filled with the smell of freshly ordered pizza, and a hug from her mother. Clicking instantly with her dog had to be one of the best feelings walking in as well as the bed to which I slept in, a lot. Being that her family is very Italian, it is safe to assume that during my time there I over ate. As my gluten allergy usually slows me down, there was no sign of that on this Island. Her mother taking the time and money to make sure that I could eat everything that they were eating, making me feel right at home, a trait that many people do not have. Over the next couple of days I met about twenty more family members and a quick hang out with her friends. There was never a dull moment in those quick days, and every voided spot could be filled with some adventure. From driving to the freezing beach to watch the waves, eating ice cream around midnight in a parked car just listening to the radio, graffiti parks, as well as falling in love with puppies that are way too expensive. There was so much to see and do on this Island. With there being only four days that I had I did not possibly get to see it all though. I was introduced to some great people, as well as having the pleasure to be put up by a wonderful family. It is safe to say that I will never forget the time I had in Long Island and I cannot wait until I can spend a little more time exploring all that it has to offer. Maybe in a little bit warmer weather, and with a little more money so I can afford the puppy I fell in love with.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
