13 Things I've Learned About Long Distance Friendships In My Three Years Of Having One

Friends are one of the greatest things in life, aren't they? Sometimes growing up means leaving things and people behind, and sometimes it means just the opposite. Sometimes it means just doing long distance for a while.

Maybe it's moving away for school, or a job or just life brings you in different directions. Even with all of the ability we have today as far as talking to and keeping in contact with people, it doesn't mean you miss your friends any less.

I've never really had a long-distance bestie before, but I've definitely learned a lot about them and what it means to be one in the last few years.

Anyone can do it.

And I literally mean ANYONE.

You communicate by sending screenshots (or tagging) each other memes/ gifs

Let's be honest, texting can be exhausting sometimes, and trying to stay in touch online isn't something that everyone is good at, so sending a picture of gif lets your BFF know you're thinking about them without saying it.

You may only see each other once or twice a year, but it feels like you haven't missed a day.

I used to see her almost every day at school. But, the main thing I've realized is I'd still love her whether she lived next door or on the moon, because the second we're back together it's like nothing has changed.

You're there for each other no matter the time of day or what is going on in your own life.

You MAKE time for that person because they're special to you.

You may not talk as much as you used to.

When you were together (or at least in the same state), you prob saw each other every single day, multiple times a day and talked constantly.

It becomes easier to detect her (his) mood through text.

How to appreciate every second, minute, and hour you do have together

I mean every single second. You can't lose precious time, you only have so much together!

You might forget that they (or you) have moved away.

And it gets a bit awkward when you call them up to hangout, only to realize the distance.

Time flies far too fast

You feel like you have only just arrived to realize its time to go.

You still have a few of your weird rituals.

Olive Garden lunch and buying tons of gummy worms/bears.

You Facetime or video chat a lot

You prob have some convos like this

Really its just so you can keep in touch and constantly be talking or communicating with each other.

You're forever besties no matter the distance

You can count on each other.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
