Why Long Books Rock

Reading long books is awesome, but not everyone agrees. Here are a few reasons you can use to prove to your friends that long books are indeed the best.

1. You get to know the character better then people in real life

You will spend a lot of time with these characters. You will see them grow and evolve. You will even remember weird details about them years later. Basically, you will have given yourself a whole little group of new best friends, right from the pages of a book.

2. Same goes for the world

By the end of a long book you will have learned all about the quirky culture, the weird magic system, and the rich history of the world. You probably will end up knowing more about the Game of Thrones political situation then the real life political situation.

3. You look super smart when reading

Everyone will be thinking about how you are probably a world class scientist or perhaps a wealthy investor as you pull out your massive book.

4. The feeling of accomplishment after

Completing a hundred page book gives you a sense of accomplishment. You finished a whole story! However, that only takes a handful of hours. Investing weeks worth of time into a five hundred or perhaps a thousand page book, will give you the satisfaction of climbing the literature equivalent of Mount Everest.

5. A break from the small stories

Whether it is six second vines, five hundred word articles or ten minute YouTube videos our days are filled with small pieces of writing and shows. Long books allow you to escape into a world that you have devoted time into and get to return to over and over again. Instead, of the brief enjoyment given out from all the short pieces of entertainment that we usually consume.

6. Increase that attention span

If you are anything like me your attention span is laughably short. I bet that while you're reading this you have at least one other source of entertainment playing. Long books help naturally increase your attention span as you sit and read for hours and enjoy focusing on one activity for so long.

7. Make reading into a habit

Small books can be read in a couple of days. Then you might not pick up another book for months. However, long books can sometimes take months. After four weeks of reading regularly, you'll want to continue reading after the long book. Something magical has happened. A habit has been born!

Now that you are incredibly excited to go read an epic story here are a few suggestions: The Lord of the Rings, The Way of Kings, and Atlas Shrugged. They should keep you busy for a few months!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
