London Grammar is a British indie pop band from Nottingham who scored some major hits with their songs "Strong," "Help Me Lose My Mind" and "Rooting For You." Their sophomore album was recently released, and therefore they embarked on a world tour. On November 23rd they stopped in Amsterdam to perform their third Dutch show in the AFAS Live.
London Grammar makes very slow, magical music. I love it, but it isn't for everyone. Luckily, the venue was filled with fans of the genre, and that makes for a great atmosphere. If I compare the concert to the one I went to in 2014, I must say this one wasn't as good. In 2014 there was an entire orchestra filled with strings, a violin, double bas, everything. They didn't have that this time, and it really lost some power because of it. Nonetheless, it still was a great concert full of remarkable vocals and a great feel for the music. I just missed the magical touch it had last time.
They started with the beautiful song, "Who Am I" from their second album, Truth Is A Beautiful Thing. The setlist varied nicely between their debut and second record, and it was filled with great songs. A few standouts were the songs, "Flickers," "Nightcall," and "Oh Woman Oh Man." Noticeably absent songs were the major hits, "Non Believer" and "Rooting For You." These songs are major hits from the album they are touring at the moment, and both weren't sung during the concert. Strange choice to not sing them, to me at least.
Overall, it was a great concert. Lead vocalist Hannah Reid has a phenomenal voice, and the atmosphere was great. I would certainly go again, but I hope the 2014 magic will be there again the next time!
