While being out of the dorms and living in your own apartment sounds like a lavish independent experience, there is a lot that people don't realize is coming. There are strange facts you learn after living in your own house and apartment. After being out of a dorm for two years and living in a house last year and an apartment complex this year, I keep finding the same recurring situations happening:
1. You always need toilet paper.
There will not be a point where toilet paper isn't on your list of things to get at the store. Going to Sam's and buying the industrial size amount still isn't going to fix this problem.
2. Bugs. There will always be bugs or creatures.
Last night there was the centipede of the century climbing on our wall. Last year, it was bats and raccoons. Then, the fleas came. There will always be bugs …
3. You will NEVER have a quiet upstairs neighbor.
You will hear their music. You will hear them stomping when they walk. You will probably even have a room designated in your apartment that you can't go in at a certain time because that's when they like to cook and it masks that whole room with the smell of eggs.
4. The garbage always has to go out.
We go through about a bag a day. We are in class all day and still somehow trash manages to get in our trash can. There is a pile always ready to be taken to the dumpster. How? I have yet to understand.
5. Pizza rolls are used for every meal.
Hmmm … I wonder what we should eat for dinner every night this week? Probably pizza rolls. You're lucky if you have fries to make with it as well. Stop living the lavish life.
6. Every problem will take 4x longer to get fixed than it should.
You call in to maintenance and expect someone there within the hour. You're lucky if they come within the week.
These are all strange, but completely true facts that happen to nearly everyone when they live in an apartment or house. If they don't happen to you, please tell me why this curse is upon me?
