We live life in a busy manner- in a rush, caught up with the tomorrows, the next weeks, the next year… not the today. Not in the moment. We rush through life, to the next thing; not taking a moment to just breath. Reflecting is this the way to live; in a to-do list manner, to live life with the idea of what can I do to benefit me, to exceed higher in the occupation. Or live life with the idea, that I need to get married at this age, live in this town in this house, have four kids and retire by the beach.
No.
Live boldly, live spontaneously. Live on edge, with your decisions on your sleeve. Be confident in your choices- live through people, experiences. Now, this doesn’t mean be irresponsible and blow off a meeting or an interview, and have some general direction of your life. It means, if you want to sit and watch Netflix with a cup of coffee or ice cream for an hour, do it.
Things will go wrong- so what. They won’t go your way. Who cares. That’s life. Don’t dwell on those moments- live joyfully.
Your occupation doesn’t define you. You may have planned to become the next Christina Yang, but can’t get past o-chem... you will not work at McDonalds. Find another way to make that dream real, if that’s what it is. If it’s meant to be, it will, and if it’s not playing out how you planned for the past nineteen years of your life, reflect if that’s what makes you happy. Decide if it’s worth it. But do it for the right reasons, not that you think being a doctor or surgeon reflects your intelligence or your place in this world. Do it for the right reasons, whatever that dream is, or else there won’t be any fulfillment in it.
What imp doing right now, writing. I may never publish a book, or get a column in a newspaper, and it may end up being a hobby. But, to write one thing that moves one person, or gets them to think, or relate to them, I have succeeded.
Do everything you do not for yourself, but something bigger. There is fulfillment in people. This is what life is; invest in people. Get to know people, make time for that. Surround yourself with people who make you into the best version of yourself. You will grow, and they will grow. It’s worth it, to sit over a cup of coffee and just talk. It’s worth your time. You will better from it, and it’s what really gives life meaning. Not your occupation, what you majored in, or how successful you will be. It’s you, who you are and how you treat people.
So, don’t worry about the tomorrows. Or the next weeks, or the next year. What are you going to do today to make it worth-while?
