Greetings, friends! It's me, a fellow English major.
I know the drill. You're in the major that "won't make you any money". I have that conversation all of the time.
"I'm a senior in college," I would begin. That sentence is followed with the obvious question: "What's your major?"
When I reply with "English Literature", people always assume that I want to teach, and that is not the case for me.
What I am trying to get at is that I understand what you go through when you tell someone you are an English major.
My parents were a little mad that I switched my major to English literature, especially when they knew that being a teacher was the last thing that I wanted to be, and they knew that I was not going in that direction.
"What in the world do you want to do if you do not want to teach?"
There are plenty of careers for me to go into. However, people do not always understand that.
I get it, a lot of people that major in English do end up teaching, but it should also be understood that teaching is not for everyone.
Now I go to a college where there are not a lot of English majors to begin with, and the department is very small.
I just do not think that people understand the power of the English language the way that we do. When it comes down to it, though, words are the one way that we communicate, and that holds a lot of weight.
So be proud, English majors! You are doing something that you love: analyzing the most basic form of communication. There are so many ways to interpret it. When you read and analyze, when you write, you are doing great things.
Just use your words.
