On Saturday, July 9, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and star of "Hamilton: An American Musical," took a bow one last time as the title role after a year’s worth of performances at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre.
The "Hamilton" story began in July of 2008, after picking up and reading Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton on vacation at the airport, Miranda was inspired by the book and wrote a rap about the founding father. He later performed it for the White House Evening of Poetry, Music, and the Spoken Word in May of 2009, which later became known as the opening number, "Alexander Hamilton" in the Broadway musical. Miranda then spent a year writing and revising a song to reflect Alexander Hamilton’s intellect, which became known as "My Shot."
By 2012, Miranda was performing many pieces based on Alexander Hamilton’s life which became known as the "Hamilton Mixtape," in which the New York Times called it out as a “game changer.” Finally, in early 2015 "Hamilton: An American Musical" made its sold-out, debut performance Off-Broadway at The Public Theater, and officially opened on August 6, 2015.
‘Hamilton’ has received positive reviews and critical acclaim as a cultural phenomenon. It was nominated for a record-breaking 16 Tony Awards in 2016 and won eleven of those nominations including the nomination for Best Musical. It received the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and lastly, the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Also, in 2015, Chernow and Miranda received the 2015 History Makers Award by the New York Historical Society for creating "Hamilton."
Who would have thought that history could be represented in a form so enthusiastic and appealing? Miranda has created something unique, revolutionary, and above all well-loved. So well-loved, in fact, that many people felt that they had to see "Hamilton" with its original cast. Saturday night’s performance resale tickets were selling for prices up to over $5,000 and with its lowest price as $1,764 on Ticketmaster.
Now, as Miranda leaves "Hamilton" he will be starring across from Emily Blunt in Walt Disney Studios’ film sequel "Mary Poppins Returns," which is set to come out in 2018; as well as currently writing music for Disney’s new animated film "Moana," which is set to come out later this year.
Also, Saturday evening marked the final performances for actors Leslie Odom, Jr. and Phillipa Soo, as Aaron Burr and Elizabeth “Eliza” Schuyler Hamilton, respectively. The two were a part of the original cast in the musical’s Off-Broadway performance with Miranda. Now, Javier Muñoz, Miranda’s understudy, will take over the title role, Brandon Victor Dixon as Burr, and Lexi Lawson as Eliza in her Broadway debut.
As stated before, "Hamilton" truly is a “cultural phenomenon.” Lin-Manuel Miranda created something that will forever go down in history as one of Broadway’s biggest sensations and creations.
