Though I don’t often take my brother’s advice, which ranges from shopping only at Baby Gap and not going on dates until I’m married, over Thanksgiving break, he recommended to my sisters and me that we beginning listening to the podcast "Limetown." At first I was hesitant, because he prefaced his explanation with the words “sci-fi podcast,” which are two words that tend to not garner much attention from me. But as he went on to explain the premise of the plot, I found myself listening closer: mysterious disappearance? Investigative reporter? Decades-old secrets? I decided to give this podcast a try, and so on my five-hour drive back to school, I found myself entirely enraptured by the plot of this thrilling story:
Ten years ago, the people of Limetown, a small settlement in Tennessee that was home to unknown scientific experiments, mysteriously disappeared without a trace. Little to no attention was given to the town at all, until a series of frantic 911 calls placed on February 8, 2004, clued people into the horror and mayhem happening within the city limits. Today, Lia Haddock, a 27-year-old investigative reporter for the radio station APR whose own uncle was a scientist who disappeared in Limetown, is looking in-depth into the story behind this enigmatic town in the middle of nowhere. When the subject of her research is publicized, she finds herself in touch with survivors who have remained hidden for the past 10 years—and all have their own secrets to reveal, while following some strict agenda that Lia cannot know. Lia finds herself deeply embroiled in the lives of these survivors while risking her own safety to know the truth.
The season finale just aired, one episode short of what listeners were promised, with a shocking plot twist that left audiences everywhere absolutely speechless—and flooding Reddit with possible theories and explanations for the series of events that transpired over the six-episode season. The geniuses behind this enthralling program, Zack Aker and Skip Bronkie, two former classmates at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, have woven an intricate plot rich with Easter eggs and over-arching themes that have listeners hungry for more. But unfortunately, unlike many podcasts of its kind, "Limetown" episodes are released sporadically and without any warning, making release of the episodes nearly as exciting as the episodes themselves.
If your eyes are desperate for a break from hours of staring blankly at a computer screen, let your imagination soar and give your eyes a break as you listen to "Limetown." It’s bound to captivate you for at least the six hours of episodes available at your leisure, if not more as you theorize and explore potential explanations for the twists and turns of the story. Whether it’s on your commute to work, walking to class, or wherever else you might find time to listen, pop in some headphones and listen to "Limetown." It’s the perfect way to escape the banality of everyday life while engaging our minds and using our long-forgotten imaginations.
