In many cases, people have some sort of hobby or activity that they enjoy the most. For some it would be playing a sport, such as football or hockey. However, for others (like myself), that hobby would happen to be video games. Ever since I was very young, I have had times where I became fixated on many different video games series. In most recent times, I have been interested in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise for a multitude of reasons. There are many aspects of the series that I thoroughly enjoy, and I would be hard-pressed to avoid talking about it at this point.
One key feature of the sonic series that I feel is quite enjoyable is the general sense of speed. The sonic series is very well known for the fact that most of the time, the player is running around at high speeds and quickly jumping and destroying robots along the way. Due to this design choice, I get very excited and engaged when playing through the sonic series. The sense of speed keeps me on my toes as I am traversing the many levels. Basically, the speed allows the player to feel as though they are part of the intense action, and it keeps the games exciting to play.
Another major element of the Sonic games that are really enjoyable is the large and exciting variety of locations that you will be exploring. In some of the games, you explore real world like locations, such as a city with large skyscrapers and highways, while others explore more fantasy locations like a galactic carnival and even a planet made out of candy and other sweets. The variety of both realistic and cartoonish areas makes the sonic series give you the best of both worlds in a sense, and I really appreciate the variety present. In many series, the games would often stick to one of these two level varieties, and it would get old over time. Since Sonic games include both, they stay fresh, entertaining, and keep the player wondering which kind of level will be explored in future installments.
One aspect of this series that extends past simply playing the games for me is listening to the exciting soundtrack. I've always been somebody who enjoys listening to music, but Sonic music to me is like a genre of its own. Many of the pieces are catchy and upbeat with repeating rhythms and fast tempos. Due to the fact that your character is going at the speed of sound, the music reflects these fast elements. The music is so enjoyable that I even made one of the level themes my ringtone! Overall, the music of the Sonic series extends beyond playing the game and is amusing in its own right.
For these reasons, I genuinely enjoy the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. From its fast paced gameplay to its exciting level environments and music variety, I find these games to be a great activity when I don't have anything else to do. I highly recommend that if you like fast-paced action games to check out the Sonic games. If I had to choose a personal favorite, it would be Sonic Adventure 2 for its gameplay with three different styles that all have a sense of speed and variety.
