Why Being A Lifeguard Is The Best Summer Job Ever

The terrible tan lines are worth it in the end

Being a lifeguard in the summer is literally all fun and games. You actually get paid to work with your best friends. Whether it is a hot or rainy day, you will always have fun as a lifeguard. Here are a few other reasons why you should consider being a lifeguard this summer:

The Tan Lines

You've heard the line "You get paid to tan" about a thousand times, but it is so true. You get to sit in the sun all day long while getting paid. This is truly the best part for some people (me especially). Although the tan lines will never truly go away and backless dresses are hard to pull off...

Slide Play

When you get done early with inservice or have some time before the next rental, always participate in slide play. Those 30 minutes will be one of the best parts of your day. At the end you'll be a little tired from running up the stairs 300 times but it is always worth it.

Friendships

You are basically at the park all summer long and working with the same people, so you are bound to make some new friends. Plus, you should make some friends so you don't stress out about getting all your shifts covered when you go on vacation.

But... it's not all fun and games sometimes. There are still a few cons to the job.

The Teenagers

Oh yes, the worst part. You'll always have the "rebellious" teenagers that don't want to listen to you and you spend all day blowing your whistle and yelling. Then they purposely sprint to the slide and pretend not to hear you about 10 times. Or the best part, when a group of kids like to drown each other right in front of you and act like it's okay.

Bad Weather

Somedays, this is a blessing because all you want to do is sleep. But most of the time, this happens when you are pulling a double plus a rental and are about to make bank. Because when the park closes, you don't get all the money you were planning on making for the day.

But in the end, the good always outweighs the bad. Being a lifeguard in the summer is an awesome job and I'll always recommend doing it, even if you are stuck with the same tan lines for years.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
