A Glimpse At Life In A Russian Orphanage

A life not chosen.

A Glimpse At Life In A Russian Orphanage
James Hill for The New York Times

Not many people know the stories of how people get adopted. Every person has a background story of how they got to where they are now, and here is one of someone who was adopted at age nine.

The orphanage was located in Russia, way up north where the winters are brutal and the summers aren't that much warmer. The two story building was rusty and the paint was peeling off of it in big chunks. The inside of it didn't look that much better. There were many kids that lived in the big white building, and for all of them it was their home.

A girl who spent most of her childhood there considered every kid that she grew up with her brothers. Every girl had been adopted at this point, and she was the only one left. The girls disappeared fast from the orphanage, but not a single guy ever seemed to leave. At this point in her life, she had lost all hope of leaving.

If she grew too old for the orphanage, at least she had her parents. They gave her up when she was a baby, but kept on visiting once in a while. Sometimes, if she was lucky, she would get the chance to leave the place for a few days to stay with her mom.

For this girl, home was not a place, but a person. The girl would even try and skip school just to see her mom because she lived so close to the school. She didn't care if the apartment that her mom lived in was not suitable for a child. She was only ever happy when she got to get away from the orphanage and could feel like part of a family.

The only other person that ever made her feel like that was her younger sister. They were practically best friends. She was very protective of her and took care of her. They would spend every day together, until the younger sister had to leave for school and the only time they ever saw each other was during summer. It was never the same.

Her life seemed like a dead end. The very first people she could trust left her in a place that she wanted nothing to do with. Her sister was gone for most of the time and no one wanted to adopt her.

One day, one of the caregivers told her that someone was interested in adopting her. It was during summer, so her sister had no way of knowing that she was leaving. Fast forward to a couple of months later and the girl could finally break free - but it came with a price. As she got into a car filled with strangers, she looked back one last time to see all the kids at the orphanage watching through the window. Her sister was one of them.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
