So what job will you do again?. Is it public relations?. How many languages can you speak?. There is always the option of saying "international studies", but it is mostly accompanied with the less popular question of "what are you going to do with that major ?". There are many struggles as an International Relations major. I mean, let's be real, the field itself is broad enough that you literally learn everything from history, politics, to economics. You name it.
I am sure that everyone have their fair share of struggles with their own majors, but for IR, no one presents it best than the less infamous, Frank Underwood himself *double taps on desk*.
1. Liberalism, Realism, Neo-Realism. It's all theory talks in the beginning..and also the end.
2. Most of the times there are no exams, and other major would start to complain how lucky we are. But just wait and see what we have to write about.
3. Essays are basically the driving force of any IR major, and the essay questions always begins with either "critically analyze this issue, or assume this issue is such, thus, argue your stance on such, etc"
4. And before there we get started on the essays, there will be tons of readings.
5. When someone talks to you about a news segment on CNN or any news websites, and you just had a 2 hour in-depth analytical discussion in your Intl. Politics of (enter any geographic region here) class.
6. 20 percent assignments and 80 percent participation. Participating heavily in discussion is what it's all about. IR tutors be like:
7. And IR debates in class be like:
8. Study abroad and learning a new language. It's part of the deal.
9. With that in mind, you have to be ready for a life of constant traveling, moving to cities and countries, far and close to your home country.
10. But at the end of the day, you know that you've gone too far to back down that you could not see yourself doing any other major. Because being an IR major has made you a more opinionated, open-minded international citizen, able to look at a certain issue and conflict going on in the world and say: I have a solution for that.
