When I came to ESU, I really knew nothing about what life in Emporia would be like. I only knew that ESU had just what I was looking for, and based on our texts over the summer, my roommate and I would get along great. I was optimistic, but I never expected what was to come. I wish someone had told me about these things from the get-go.

1. The trains.

Oh gosh, the trains. I don't have any near my hometown, so needless to say, they kept me up at night for a few days. But, don't fret – you'll get so used to them, and eventually you won't even hear them anymore! That being said, do be careful when crossing the tracks.

2. When it rains, it pours.

There's no such thing as a "light rain" in Emporia, Kansas; I don't think there's been a rain in the year that I've lived here that hasn't flooded many of the country roads, and even some city ones. I don't really know why it's so heavy here, but lucky for me, I love rain! The road between Welch Stadium and the Towers Complex is fun to play in when it's flooded.

3. We're adults now.

Now this one, I did know. I was excited to be out of high school, not feeling judgement or be around the immaturity of my peers. But I wish someone had told this to some of the people I encountered. It wasn't always as judgement free or mature as I had hoped for, but I guess that's life. But, fellow Hornets, I beg you, leave your judgements and your immaturity in the past! It's time to be a grown up.

4. Emporia, Kansas: Founding city of Veteran's Day.

This one something that the town is incredibly proud of, as we should be. If you're interested in history, or to just want know a bit more about the town you've chose to live in, I suggest checking out the memorials and going to the museum & other historic buildings. There's a lot of history in this old town.

5. Emporia smells like oatmeal.

Can someone please explain this one to me? Why does it smell like that??

6. Drink up.

In 2013, Emporia was voted to have the best drinking water in the world! Even though we don't currently hold that title, we still claim it. You can actually taste a difference between my hometown and here. Take advantage of it, drink up and keep hydrated.

7. Do stuff.

I am not so much of a social butterfly, and truth be told, I was ready to stay home and take online classes before my high school counselor pointed me towards ESU. So, due to that, it took me awhile to warm up to the idea of being social. While other people from my floor were constantly going to events and hanging out, I was binging Netflix (disclaimer: I still do this). Though, when I finally did start doing things, I quickly came out of my shell, to my own surprise. I highly encourage you to just dive in! Make friends & acquaintances, be spontaneous, explore our town, and go to events. If you regret it, I'll even let you to hold me accountable.

8. Zoo admission is free.

That's right. It costs nothing to go to the zoo here! It's always a fun afternoon trip, and never fails to disappoint, even if it's not as elaborate as you're used to. Head over to 75 Soden Road.

9. Plumb Hall stairs.

I guess I should've known. On my campus tour, the guides told me the ascent wouldn't ever get easier, and it really doesn't. It's 83 steps of sheer exhaustion from bottom to top. So, if you take the elevator, we won't judge.

10. You're gonna fall in love.

You might, or you might not find your soulmate here. You could fall in love with the school, or you could not and decide to leave. But you'll fall in love with something in Emporia. Whether it's the town itself, the people you meet or the memories you make, you're gonna fall in love.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
