A Letter To The Victims Of The Umpqua Community College Shooting

"Are you a Christian? Good, because you're a Christian you are going to see God in just about one second."

On October 1, 10 students lost their lives. Many rumors have gone around on why these students were killed. The one rumor that has stuck in my mind is that students might have been targeted because of their religion.

As a believer in Christ, I sit back and wonder what I would have done in this frightening situation. Imagine a student standing up in your classroom tomorrow, and as they stated that they were a Christian, they were shot in the head. After the first student was killed for stating their religion, I wonder if I would I have honestly done the same. Would you? In my mind, I tell myself yes. I would have stood up and proclaimed Jesus as my savior, even if I knew what it would lead to, but this is still questionable. I applaud each student that stood up and proclaimed Christ as their savior. It took bravery and courage. They knew how that statement would end, and they still stated that they were Christian. I know that many would lie to protect themselves. They would state a lie saying that they did not follow Christ. But as Christians, is that what we are called to do? Are we told to back down in times of fear and trouble? Or are we told to call and trust in our Father? Because of their selflessness, I pray that many have been led to the glory of Christ. I also hope that, like me, it has made many Christians sit back and wonder what they would have done in this situation.

Christ says, "But whosoever shall deny me before men, I also will deny before my father who is in heaven." Matthew 10:33

I want to thank them, each student, that gave their life just like Christ did for us. If they could read this right now, I would want them to know that they are now seen as heroes. They made a sacrifice for Christ, and for every follower of Christ. They followed His word and stood up for their Father in a time of darkness and fear. Each person who's life was lost in this devastating shooting has inspired me to look toward the Father, in times of happiness and in times of trouble. I thank them for giving me the spark I need to trust and follow Him in every situation. I know that they have not only inspired me, but they have inspired thousands of Christians across America. They gave their lives, their futures, and their dreams for one statement. One statement that Christ had prepared them for their entire lives. I find comfort in knowing that they are now among Christ and His angels in eternity.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
