Dear Twenty One Pilots,
First off, I want to say thank you. Thank you for never giving up on your dream of being a band and being musicians. You started as a little band from Columbus Ohio with self-released albums, and you've grown to a band that has thousands of followers (aka the skeleton clique) and many popular albums. I am so proud of how far you both have come. Secondly, thank you for being so real. Your lyrics are deep, personal and dark. For someone who is all three of those things, your lyrics bring me extreme comfort. Tyler, thank you for being open about your demons and insecurities, especially in your past album Blurryface. Thank you for being open about your own Blurryface, which gave me the chance to be open about my Blurryface, my deepest insecurities. For someone who has also faced depression for the majority of my life, your lyrics resonate with me. Knowing that someone else who deals with the same things as I do brings me comfort when I need it the most. Your lyrics are poetry and I keep them stored in my heart. Your messages of hope and purpose have given me hope on my darkest days. Josh, thank you for being the weird, quirky, loving person that you are. You are passionate, and bring so much more to the band than just drums. Especially with the newest tour going on, seeing the intro to Polarize which gave us a look into your own Blurryface and insecurities, made us see that not only Tyler is fighting his Blurryface, but you are, too. You both have shown me that I am not alone in this fight. Thank you for helping me feel less alone.
To the both of you, thank you for producing music. Thank you for saving my life. On a night that I wanted to end it all, Truce started playing on my Spotify. I had never heard it before, and when I did, I completely broke down. As the lyrics “The sun will rise and we will try again. Stay alive, stay alive for me” played on repeat, I decided that I was going to choose life…to stay alive. Thank you for your words of hope that made me decide to stay alive.
From your first album to your latest, I continue to find meaning in your lyrics. When I have a bad day, I listen to your songs on repeat, and they help me to keep breathing and to keep going. No matter what, I will always support you. From helping to save my life with your music to reminding me to smile when I see funny interviews of you both and to finally seeing you live during the Emotional Road Show tour, you are a big part of my life. I will hold your message of hope in my pockets to use on the days when I seem to lose my way. I will always stay alive, stay alive for you. I will always be a part of the few, the proud and the emotional.
“We are Twenty One Pilots, and so are you”
Love always,
Hannah Y.
