We will call her Jane...

Dear Jane,

I want you first and foremost to know that it’s OK. There will be days or weeks, even months when it feels like things just aren’t going right. There will be times when you want to give up. And I don’t mean just leave-a-project-unfinished give up; I mean, days when you just want to stay curled up in a ball sobbing in bed, give up. Days will come when you feel like you can’t drag yourself out of bed and face the world. Where it will mean waking up and having to explain to the world, why you just can’t. These days will mark inkblots in your life, they will feel like failures in your history. However, it is not failure and don’t even think for a second that it means the end. Like I mentioned before these days will only be ones of “think,” not of what truly is. Because every day you face a world that hurdles stones at you, you are succeeding. You are a champion in your life. Every second you brave this world, you are one step closer to greatness. So yes, you may fall and you may need to take a breath, but these days are still milestones in your life. You survived the bleakness and those should be ones of memories. However, not memories that spark fear and disdain, but memories of pride and anticipation. Let these days of “procrastination” and “laziness” that others label you, be days that bring about hope of a better tomorrow, because now, after every passing day, you are one step closer.

So f*** the words unmotivated, procrastination and laziness and the negative connotations they form about you. No one knows what is going on in your life, no one can judge you unless you let them. Don’t feel unaccomplished or defeated because it isn’t over until you say it is. Let there venom be the fuel to your fire. Let it burn inside of you and spark a new beginning.

Days shouldn’t be denoted by letter grades; they shouldn’t be pass or fail and the only way to pass is by participating or by showing up. Days should be marked by the effort you put into each day, whatever that may be. Unmotivated is just a word that people use to draw offense to people they think aren't as accomplished as themselves. The thing is, though, that you have no idea what the struggles are in each person's life. You don't know the hardships they have endured and you don't have any clue about the weight that lays on their shoulders every waking second.

Jane, don’t stress about the day. Just do your best, even if that means laying in bed all day sometimes. Don’t freak out and wonder what people will think, because that doesn’t matter. They have no control in your life. Trust me, I’ve had those moments where people ask "So what are you doing with your life?" Or the famous, "You should be more productive with your day." I get those questions that others throw at us, but I know that they have all had days where they weren’t preaching those same words. You can’t lump every day into a specific category, it’s just not fair. Each day should be something new, that means it can be terrible or it can be absolutely amazing. So, you know what my motto is now, Jane. Live your life day by day and to the fullest you can. And if those aren’t up to others standards, you know what finger to give them.

Your other half,

Megan

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
