A Letter To My New Sisters On Bid Day

You're home! All of us older sisters are so happy each and every one of you here. It was a long week, but just as we saw something in you that we wanted to bring into our sisterhood, you saw a piece of yourself that wanted to be here. For that, I am thankful. That's what I wanted everyone to see and feel when they came in this house: real, true sisterhood.

This year is going to be awesome for you! You are going to experience so many things as you start college. Between class, work, and Greek life, you are going to be busy, busy, busy, but you'll find time for fun. Right now, you may not even know everyone's name yet - which will take some time. You just received a hundred new sisters and friends! You aren't having sleepovers and crazy nights with your sisters yet, but trust me, you will. You may be a little shy and not completely open with everyone just yet, but it will come. I was the same way. Now, everyone in the house knows every detail about me and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I know during recruitment we seem completely polished and our lives look as close to perfect as possible, but they're not. Don't be surprised if you see us running around campus, late for class, with our hair in a messy ponytail and no makeup on. You'll learn that college will stress you out and some days we don't have the time to put effort into our looks, but we hope that won't matter to you.

You'll probably experience some rough times during this year, too. You might fail a test, decide to miss class and take a nap, which results in missing an attendance grade or a pop quiz. Your family at home may experience some hardships and you'll be upset that you can't be there with them. The guy who seems to be the nicest, best dressed, well-mannered boy might break your heart. You'll drift apart from your friends at home, all the while getting closer to your sisters here at school.

But, no matter what you go through this year, you'll have the unwavering support of the sisterhood that you joined. You'll always have someone to cheer you on, congratulate you, and brag about you when you do well. Even on a bad day, you'll have someone to hug you, pick you up, and tell you that it is all going to be alright.

You'll always have a study partner, a lunch date, and someone to tag along with you when you meet some guy for the first time. You'll always have a place to go, even when you feel like you don't and someone will always come get you when you are lost or need a ride home.

Welcome home, girls. Here's to the best four years of your life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
