A Letter To My Daughter

We live in a "mean girl" era

A Letter To My Daughter
Kaitlyn Rankin

Dear Daughter,

You're only one right now, but I wanted to tell you something. The world is a crazy and an unfair place, especially for a girl. Right now, even as a toddler, you're loud, independent, opinionated, and a free spirit... just like your mother. And let me tell you, it will get you in trouble. I know from experience. I've been told that there are times when I should keep my mouth shut about what I believe in. That I should find a good man that can take care of me. That I should get a boring office job where I'll be miserable. That my dreams are pipe dreams and I'll never be successful in them.

Well, let me tell you something. I refuse to let you believe that. If you believe in something, you fight for it. Never depend on a man. Follow your dreams, whether your passion is art, barrel racing, music, photography, modeling, or whatever else. I will support you no matter what. Do what you love because doing something you don't love is emotionally draining. Be opinionated.

Be unapologetically yourself.

Don't let anyone tell you different.

We live in a "mean girl" era. A world where if you're not skinny with a big butt, big boobs, and perfect eyebrows, you're not valued as much. Women get jealous and try to tear you down to make themselves feel like they're on a higher pedestal. They're not and no matter what is said to you, do not believe it. They are snakes and will bite as soon as they get the chance.

Stay humble. You are not better than anyone else and no one is better than you. Even if other people think so. No matter how much you have, God can take it all away in an instant.

Do your best not to be a mean girl. Do not live with hate and jealousy in your heart. Real women applaud and uplift each other. Those women will make great friends. Those are the kind of people you will want to surround yourself with. People who will be on your team. And in return, you'll root for them.

Whatever your passion, do it with all of your soul. It's okay to lose yourself within it. It's okay to lose yourself in happiness. Why? Because if you don't, you're not fully living.

Live fully and passionately.

That's all I want for you.

Love always,

Your Momma

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
