A Letter To My Teenage Self

In a sea of accomplishments, we still have some regrets.

When you’re growing up, everyone always warns you to cherish those moments because they will be over in the blink of an eye. As I sit here, 18 years later, it’s finally dawned on me how true those words actually are. I spent countless minutes, months, and even years of my every waking moment trying to impress people who didn’t even know me. I wasted so much energy worrying about crafting the perfect image of myself in order to be proven worthy in their eyes that I missed out on some major opportunities for self-growth. There is nothing that I regret more than the way that I shaped myself in my younger years, forever hoping to be noticed and approved of by strangers who were solely caught up in their own lives. While it’s hard to admit, I even modified my behaviors, attitudes, and physical looks in order to conform to an unspoken standard that so many teenagers lived and died by. I’ve always felt guilty for not living life the way that I wanted to live it, for not paving my own path. So, this is a letter to everyone out there who is still trying to navigate the difficult sea of life, but who is trapped beneath the surface and gasping for a breath of air. Don’t let the water fill your lungs. Take advantage of the mistakes that I made and learned from as a teenager in order to avoid experiencing them yourself. Be you, make your own path, follow your own passions, and don't worry about what people think!

1. You don’t need a date to go to prom, just go to have fun.

2. Going makeup free won’t kill you. If anything, it is a display of self-confidence and love. Take it from T-Swift!

3. Glasses don’t equal dorkiness, they just mean that you have poor vision.

4. Words do hurt and spreading rumors can only do more damage. Strive to be kind to everyone!

5. Try new things because they actually interest you, not because you are trying to impress someone.

6. Eating that extra piece of bread isn’t the end of the world, just treat yourself.

7. Staying up until 3:00 in the morning to finish homework is completely unnecessary (save the all-nighters for college). Sleep is more important!

8. Sitting with that person who is eating alone at lunch is worth the judgmental stares because you can take pride in knowing that you made someone’s day better.

9. Spend as much quality time with your family as possible. Sooner than you know it, you’ll be out on your own and you'll have to figure out life for yourself.

10. Don’t argue when your neighbor comes over and begs for you to go on an adventure. Nice weather and enjoying extra time with friends are what life is all about!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
