I took for granted the length of my summer. I thought I was so lucky that I wouldn't have to leave for school until the end of September after all my friends left in the beginning of August. Don't get me wrong, the quarter system is better than the semester system in so many more ways that one, however, I still have a month and a half left of school, and you only have a week.
No matter what anybody tells you, FOMO is a very real thing. How am I supposed to focus in school when every Snapchat story is of all my friends tanning by the lake? It's hard enough to sit in a classroom when it's already 80 degrees outside. Same goes for winter break. We get it, your break is like five weeks long, brag about it more. Your winter break takes up the same amount of time as half of a quarter. Let that soak in.
All a student really wants is to make money, yet while I'll be waiting for my last quarter to wrap up, you guys will be snatching up all the last of the good job opportunities in our small town. I just want to be able to treat myself to more than Top Ramen and Cup of Noodles.
I envy you, semester students. By the time we've finished syllabus week, we are already being knocked down by our first round of midterms, and no average human can comprehend a single concept in that amount of time. Some can, but they are definitely not average.
By the time a quarter system student is done with school for the summer, students will have grey hair and wrinkles. Registering three separate times in a year can most certainly cause some emotional trauma. Gonzaga University registers for classes at 12 a.m., whereas the University of Washington registers at 6 a.m. Let me say that again...6 a.m. A person's most vulnerable hour. I can't count the number of people I've seen crying into their computer as they quickly scramble to come up with a new schedule after submitting their registration at 6:00:01 instead of exactly 6:00:00 on the dot. But hey, I only take three classes a quarter. How many do you take?
On a more positive note, the quarter system gives you three (even four if you choose) opportunities in a year to have a clean slate. Sometimes you are forced to take certain classes that no one would ever want to take, but that is when it is truly a blessing to only have 10 week classes. Believe it or not, 10 weeks fly by faster than you think. It is both a blessing and a curve.
Quick note: please don't expect to get in to our parties. We have ID cards for a reason. That's just irritating.
Even though semesters and quarters both have highs and lows, all students can relate that college causes emotional problems anyway. Sometimes we just need to stick together.
