To all the writers, creators, producers and directors working on a sequel to a movie that I loved during my childhood, this is for you.
Last week I went to one of the very first showings of "Finding Dory." I was experiencing a mix of emotions, as I honestly was nervous that it wasn’t going to live up to my expectations. I mean, I’ve waited thirteen years for something like this to come out; of course, I’m going to be nervous. Luckily, I found "Finding Dory" to live up to even the highest of my expectations. As I initially walked out of the theater, I was incredibly happy, but then I thought about it further. This is only the first of many sequels and live-action remakes of my favorite childhood movies. What if they don’t all live up to my expectations?
So producers, directors, and everyone involved, you guys better do a damn good job with the rest of them. Obviously, with every movie that comes out you crave for it to be amazing, but these are not just ordinary movies. These aren’t even regular “kid movies.” These movies have been waited on for years by so many young adults, and you really don’t want to let us down. See, the thing is that if you do well with the sequel, then the series can live on forever; however, if you do poorly with the sequel, then you’ll taint the series as a whole. It will always be “Oh, 'The Incredibles' was such a great movie. Too bad they had to ruin it with the second one.” Nobody wants that.
I hope that you consider the thousands of people who have waited and waited anxiously for the release of these movies. Please don’t ruin our fond memory of our childhood movies. Do them justice. Make them the best movie you’ve ever worked on. I would rather think that the sequel was 100x better than the original than having the sequel suck altogether. I think I can speak for most people my age when I say that we’re very nostalgic when it comes to stuff like this. We’re going to have extremely high hopes for these movies, so don’t let us down. Please. You started off wonderfully with "Finding Dory." Let’s hope it only goes uphill from here.
Good luck,
A Nostalgic Millennial
