A Letter To My Niece

The joy of being an aunt.

A Letter To My Niece
Lauren Murray

Dear Scarlett,

You have only been on this Earth for a couple of days now, and I can not still believe that you are here. You came early and fast, ready to take on the world by storm, and everyone is happy you are finally here. The nine months waiting for you seemed to fly by, looking back on it now. I remember getting a call and learning about my soon to be nephew or niece - and I was team girl from day one as well.

I remember finding out you would be a little girl, and I joked with your mom that she was having a baby girl because one of her go-to karaoke songs was "All American Girl" by Carrie Underwood. You are exquisite and special, that is why your parents wanted a special name for you - to show your uniqueness. Scarlett Elizabeth Penzo, born March 11, 2016 at 10:01 p.m. You were a peanut weighing in at 7.1 pounds, 19 inches long - and who could miss your already bright blonde hair.

Everyone says it is so exciting to be an aunt and I should be so proud - but I did not know what that meant until now. The first couple years of your life I may miss some moments, being away at school, but I will always be there for you. I may still be young and figuring things out myself, but I have the wisdom of 19 years so far to help lead you down the right path.

You will walk, talk and hopefully have the singing capabilities of your mom - and I can not wait to see them all happen. But, first, we will cherish this cute little baby stage, and watch you grow before our eyes. Already, being a couple days old, you have grown those chubby baby rolls everyone loves, and have a full blonde head of hair going on. The world is just starting for you, and you have already had a bunch of loved ones coming to see you throughout the first days of your life. You have a family standing by you, and with you always - never forget that.

So, little baby Scarlett, even though you can not read this, I hope you will one day know. I am here for you, and your family is always here for you - whenever you need us. Never be scared to call when you need me, do not fear what the futures brings and know you are one special girl - and it is just the beginning of a wonderful life ahead. I can not wait to take you to Disney, watch you open your first Christmas present and see what your first year of life brings you - and the many smiles ahead.

“Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” ― Winnie The Pooh

Love,

Auntie Laur

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
