A mi querida familia,

Abrazos,

McK

To my family,

Thank you for welcoming me into your home and community as your own daughter. Thank you for teasing me and dragging me out of my bed at a reasonable hour every morning. Thank you for expecting me to cook dinner, feed the guinea pigs and pick corn like any other member of the family.

Thank you for making me watch dramatic telenovelas in crowded rooms. Thank you for having patience with me, especially when trying to teach me Kichwa. Thank you for telling everyone in the community that I can't roll my r's and making me demonstrate how my "perro" sounds like "Pedro."

Thank you for asking me questions about where I am from and what I believe instead of making snap judgments about what you have heard about North Americans. Thank you for teaching me that identity, culture and religion can be broad and that new and old beliefs can be intertwined. Thank you for teaching me about caring for and thanking Inti (the sun) and Pachamama (the Earth).

Thank you for offering to send out a search party to try and find me a boyfriend as soon as you realized I wasn't married. Thank you for trying to say my name and then making a game out of it when no one could. (Trying to say McKinley may be a new favorite wedding game.)

Thank you for trying to teach me soccer-- I know it's a hopeless cause. Thank you for playing music with me and teaching me how to play instruments I'd never seen before. Thank you for making my siblings accompany me to the tiendas at night. Thank you for trusting me to take care of your small children, even though most of the time, they were probably taking care of me.

Thank you for teaching me the value of hard work, but also the pricelessness of family time and how sometimes the can be combined. Thank you for your generosity-- never failing to give me plates overflowing with food. Thank you for lighting the gas stove for me and always sending Nayeli and Daky to help me in the kitchen. Thank you for teaching me how to bargain. T

hank you for helping me learn the value of education and the value of learning from each other. Thank you for explaining politics during late night talks in the kitchen. Thank you for worrying about me and bringing me tea and soup when I was sick. Thank you for going on adventures with me.

Thank you for making me try new things. Thank you for making me take responsibility for my privilege, but also making me realize it's not something that's negative. Thank you for singing, rapping, dancing and laughing with me. Thank you for accepting me, caring for me and being my family.

I miss you more than words can express.

Abrazos,

McK

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
