Just like any other college student, I walk through campus on my way to class. Just like any other college student, I bring the materials I need to class. However, as an arts major I don't always fit in with everyone else during the bustle of class changes.
I'm a double major in dance and communication, and at times it can feel like I am leading a double life. Just today, I went to one of my classes for my dance major in what I would call normal attire, a leotard and tights. Then, I had to make a complete wardrobe change into a dress and take my hair out of my ballerina bun to avoid awkward stares on the street and confrontation in the classroom.
I learned the hard way freshman year, that sometimes people just don't get it. I walked into a history class wearing a leotard and tights, a sweater, and some shorts. You would have thought that I had 3 heads with the looks that I got. I didn't understand why I was suddenly a freak show in the classroom. I had my ballet class directly afterwards and wouldn't have enough time to get ready during the break, so I was just trying to be a prepared student.
That is really the main reason why we are all here, right? To get an education and succeed in our future. So just because my major calls for a different dress code or different requirements, doesn't mean that I should be thought of as weird or as having an "easy major". There is no such thing. Every major has it's challenges. Yes, I love dance and it can be fun, but it is also really difficult at times. I actually do use books. I don't just dance and play around. So next time you go to judge someone because of their major or what they study, think again.
