We Need To Stop The Slut-Shaming

It is 2017, times are changing and we need to adapt.

As time evolves so does society and the way women and men are viewed by each other. Throughout history, women's sexuality is often a topic amongst men and, of course, other women.

Throughout history accepted standards of "beauty in women" changed drastically from decade to decade. Starting from the Egyptian Era in 1292 B.C. where women were celebrated for their sexuality all the way up to what is now known as Post Modern Era that focuses more on healthy bodies.

While it is hard for some to accept times changing, it is vital in the ever changing world. Old standards of things like premarital sex or what is acceptable to wear to certain events are outdated for a lot of the population. We can see this very evidently in celebrities where some standards are accepted while others are not for ridiculous reasons.

For example, a recent tweet showed how some people react to nude photos of Justin Bieber praising him but wrote mean things about Demi Lovato in an outfit and laying in bed.

As opposed to rude comments Lovato received basically doing the same thing as Bieber, all because she is a woman while he is a man.

Unrealistic standards such as these are very outdated. The post modern era we are now in when it comes to women's bodies is supposed to show off healthy bodies that women are proud of.

What women preach most today to themselves and each other is accepted and love for what you were given and embracing it. While this is something many women struggle with, it helps when we support each other instead of posting rude comments under a selfie that we may have been proud of. Tearing other people down does nothing but make you and others feel worse about themselves.

Everyone needs to accept the reality that it is 2017: gay marriage is very legal, women and men are and should be treated equally in every way, genders are changing whether we like it or not, and if we want to post a sexy selfie because we feel confident and proud of ourselves, we have every right in the world to.

The insistent slut-shaming that occurs has been recognized by women everywhere so public figures such as Amber Rose and Girl Boss creator Sophia Amoruso have taken actions to empower women when it comes to their bodies rather than tear them down.

Amber Rose holds a "Slut Walk" every year to raise awareness of gender inequality and rape among American women. This mile long walk coincides with her self-titled foundation who's slogan is "All Things Women and Arts Empowerment."

Sophia Amoruso uses social media to empower women by posting inspirational gender equal, self-love and many other messages. While social media is something that most of us merely scroll through throughout the day, one message like the ones she posts can change a woman's entire day when they may need it.

All in all, times are changing. It would be beneficial to ourselves and others to adapt to these changes and instead of tearing people down, build them up to make us stronger as a society. Although this would be the logic humane thing to do, there will always be those who will continue to disregard this and stay set in their ways. So be yourself, love yourself, do what you believe is right!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
