What do you give to the person you owe everything to?

Birthday gifts for my mother are probably some of the most difficult to find. Since coming to college, my gifts have involved a birthday Snap and an extra-long phone call in as much Spanish as I can muster. Finding the perfect gift for my mom is always tough, especially when she's given me so many. But perhaps this year, my gift to you, mama, will be proof that I actually do listen to everything you say.

So please enjoy 15 of the most important life lessons I have learned from my mother.

1. Family comes first.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

*Cue "We're Family" from "James and the Giant Peach."*

2. Take pictures of everything. Always.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

My mother takes this piece of advice to heart. A family outing is basically just a family photoshoot with a little bit of fun in between.

3. What matters in life is not what happens to you, but what you remember and how you remember it.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

Okay, this is technically a quote from Gabriel Garcia Marquez, one of my mom's favorite authors, but she's said it so much it might as well have been an original quote. What matters in life are the memories you make. And the pictures you take of those memories, obviously.

4. Don't underestimate the power of the rosary.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

You have a problem? Pray the rosary. You're feeling down, lost, confused? Pray the rosary. You've realized your mother is, was, and always will be right? Pray the rosary.

P.S. This is the face my mother makes when I tell her I prayed the rosary and it worked. The lesson here? Don't doubt Mom or the rosary.

5. Nothing is ever truly lost.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

Sure she means it in the "Pray to St. Anthony to find your missing socks" kind of way, but there's definitely some non-sock related wisdom in there.

6. Nothing is forever.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

Everything is fleeting, so enjoy it while it lasts. This applies to relationships, "Jane the Virgin," and tacos. This does not apply to God, family, and especially not my mother's wisdom.

7. Reputations matter—make yours a good one.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

During Taylor Swift's Reputation Era, you can totally bet that my mom walked around like Taylor herself listened to my mom's advice.

8. Don't let someone walk all over you just because you think you love them.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

Junior year of high school was a bit of a low point for me. I didn't realize it then, but my mother was helping me every way she could. At the time, I thought she was saying I was weak when she told me this, but only now I understand how little I knew about love, and my mom was only trying to teach me what love is supposed to be like.

9. True love doesn't hurt others.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

Similarly, this is one of the most resounding bits of advice my mom has ever given me. True love cannot be built on a foundation of other people's pain. Again, junior year was a rollercoaster of emotions, and my mom was there to help me through it all.

10. Don't be quick to label yourself.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

Labels are like bad stickers. Once they're stuck, they're stuck. Don't limit yourself to one identity or aspect of yourself.

11. Success is creating happiness for you and those around you.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

Success isn't fame and fortune, but getting to a point where you are truly happy.

12. Stick with people you can trust.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

Friends are people who have your back always so choose them wisely. Similarly, Mom is someone you can always trust to bring up your acne.

13. Dance, even if you aren't good at it.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

Or alternatively, "You should know how to dance! You're Latina, it's in your blood! Dance!"

14. Mom's advice means a good life.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

It even kind of rhymes, which goes to show you how true it is. I think my mom's favorite piece of advice to give is to listen to her advice.

15. Limes, limes, and more limes.

Anna Hernandez-Buces

A headache? Use a lime. Nauseous? Use a lime. Your food is severely lacking in flavor? Use a lime. Limes are key, they fix every single problem you will ever have. If they don't, try a rosary.

Mama, you have spent 20 years working to raise me into a woman who can stand her ground. And while I'm always going to need you, I'd like to think you have succeeded on that front. So just in case, you thought I didn't listen to all your advice, thank you for everything you've taught me, and everything you continue to teach me. Happy birthday, mami, te quiero mucho.

And thank you for keeping my dorm fridge stocked with limes, I don't know where I'd be without them.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
