5 Lessons I've Learned Since I've Been Working With The Elderly

My major at school is Gerontology and you're probably scratching your head right now saying "Gero - what - ogy " ?. Basically, I am studying aging and I want to work in a nursing home. But ever since I have started in 2011, I have learned so many lessons. Here are some of them :)

1. Patience Goes A Long Way

There have been moments where clients have gotten angry or started getting frustrated. Now, I am no professional but I have learned that keeping calm can go a LONG WAY. By keeping calm, this assures the client that everything will be ok and you will get everything figured out.

2. Learn Their Stories

I work with Holocaust survivors every Wednesday and It's amazing all the stories I have heard. I have truly been inspired so many times to stand up for what I believe in because of these stories. Everyday heroes.

3. It's all fun and games

Pretty self-explanatory: They love playing games. I've learned card games, board games and even chair volleyball ( look it up it's so cool ). Another thing I learned is even though they're older, they can still do the things they love most! I've been to Indians games, movies and art classes! So fun!

4. F.r.i.e.n.d.s

I've made so many new friends throughout all of my volunteering experiences! It's so fun to do activities with them and laugh, talk and hear their stories! I can't count how many times I've walked into a room where I volunteered and heard " Hi Friend " or " Brandon how are you pal " !

5. You Make A Difference

My motto is " If I make someone smile, my day was worth while " and I live by that every time I volunteer. I love making people smile and I can't count how many times when I would talk to people they've said " Brandon. You don't know how much joy you bring me. It's so nice to have young people like you volunteering ". I've made a difference and so can you

I have been volunteering for six years now and don't regret it for one second. I am so happy to make a difference in people's lives and you know the saying " It takes one person to make a difference ". Be that person :)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
