10 Things That Living Away From Home Has Taught Me

I'm sure I'm not done learning yet...

This year, I moved into a house in Greenville with three other girls and it has been quite the adventure. Aside from navigating roommates and coexisting with other people, there's the simple stuff I thought I knew but actually… didn't.

Here are 10 things that living without my parents has taught me.

1. Just because you get something in the mail, doesn't mean it's $20 from a family member.

More likely than not, it's a bill, junk mail, or did I mention, a bill?

2. It's expensive to be healthy.

Giphy

You start to realize that Lunchables are drastically less expensive than kale.

3. Doctors appointments don't make themselves.

Giphy

When you're not feeling well, you can't just show up and be seen. There's a process to it...

4. Clothes will actually get wrinkly by sitting in the drier.

Giphy

Am I the only one who never did laundry until college? You learn something new everyday!

5. The small pleasures go out the window.

Giphy

Dry cleaning? Home-cooked meals? Not so easy doing them on your own.

6. Anything you can wait to buy until you go home, you wait.

Giphy

Do I really need dryer sheets immediately?

7. You can't pick your neighbors.

Giphy

I don't think that after college, I'd choose to live across from a fraternity house again.

8. Don't forget to blow the candle out!

Giphy

My mom would religiously come behind me at home and blow out the candle I had lit when I inevitably forgot about it. Well, let's just say I'm glad I haven't burned the house down yet.

9. It's kind of important to turn the lights off when you're not home.

One outrageously high utility bill later and I will never leave a light on again.

10. Your house won't clean itself.

This year I've had to learn to use a swiffer and I'm honestly not happy about it.

Although living at home is carefree and easy, living without my parents have taught me things (although obvious to some people) that I know I'm better off for learning. A few things I've had to learn the hard way, but having the best roommates and parents has made it that much easier. Although I'm sure I'm not done learning yet…

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
