I recently found an awesome playlist on Spotify called "This is: Britney Spears." As expected for someone who grew up listening to BritBrit, this playlist has been the only music I've listened to for a week.
While driving to the gym, Britney Spears at full volume, something struck a chord with me that I had never noticed before. One of my favorite songs by her, "Piece of Me," is actually really heartbreaking.
Aside from its catchy beat and take-no-shit attitude, the fact that a celebrity had to write and record a song about everything people say about her on a day-to-day basis is really sad. When she sings, "Guess I can't see the harm in working and being a mama," it really stuck out because I never realized that no matter what profession you are, if you are a mom, people are going to judge you for also working.
And then she goes on to say that, "Even with a kid on my arm I'm still an exceptional earner." Well, duh. OF COURSE Britney Spears is an exceptional earner while still being a mom. But as a celebrity and a woman, she felt like she had to let people know that.
Throughout the song, I just kept feeling worse and worse for what Britney was singing about. Between being "Mrs. Oh my God, that Britney's shameless," and "Mrs. She's too big, now she's too thin," I kept thinking, what if that were me?
And really, it shouldn't — and it doesn't — matter if it's me or if it's a celebrity. Harassing people, judging people, and talking bad about people is never okay.
Most people are guilty of talking about celebrities differently than they would talk about people they knew. The difference is that celebrities are in the limelight, so they seem like a different type of person who is either immune to comments by people and media or deserving of this treatment because "they chose to be famous."
But Britney Spears — and every other celebrity out there — never asked to be judged. They never asked to be stalked and harassed by paparazzi and to be talked about by strangers on the Internet. The only thing they asked for and chose was to follow their dreams of being a musician or an actor or anything else that makes someone a "celebrity."
So when Britney sings "I'm Mrs. Most likely to get on the TV for strippin' on the streets when getting the groceries. No, for real. Are you kidding me?" take a moment to listen to what she is saying. People are making conclusions about her that have no grounds.
Yeah, she had a bit of a breakdown in 2008, but that's also not a reason to judge her. The only thing Britney should be judged on is what she puts out in the world. She's a musician, and no matter how much celebrity gossip there is, we do not know her for who she really is. We only know her music, and that is only one side to her. It's okay to love or hate her music, but judging every aspect of her life is not appropriate. Celebrities are people too, and they do not deserve the hate and harassment that they get every day.
