What I Learned at Vidcon 2016

Advice on how to get and stay motivated to create

This year was my second year at Vidcon and instead of a community pass I wore a creator pass. I have been inconsistently making videos for my YouTube channel since the summer after I graduated high school and was consistently uploading four to five days a week last fall. In the last five months, however, I lost my motivation. I didn’t have anything interesting to say or anything fun to show off. I was in a rut.

So going into VidCon this weekend I wasn’t very excited to be there and I wasn’t sure what I would get out of the experience a second time around. But I kept my mind as open as I could and at the end of each day realized I was becoming more and more energized to be back in such a creative space as the online community. I listened to panels about how to tell your story online and watched people who inspire me share their creative struggles.

While completely different, each panel essentially reminded me that my voice does matter and that there is an audience out there who might need to hear what I have to say or see my perspective on the world. I have become inspired to jump back into making online video and I want to share some of the things brought me back.

So here is a list of quotes and other things that I learned at VidCon 2016:

  1. Prioritize self care
  2. Set boundaries in your relationships (with family, friends, fans, and the people you look up to)
  3. Having a YouTube channel is an investment
  4. “Nothing [and no one else] can do anything for you until you do everything for yourself” - Connor Manning
  5. Perspective is what makes a story unique and important
  6. “I don’t let the praise go to my head or the hate go to my heart” - Michael Buckley on YouTube comments
  7. “Simplicity can actually make something amazing” - Vincent Cyr
  8. “Boredom is a choice” - Mitchell Davis
  9. Think of your creative work (ie. your YouTube channel) as an extension of yourself so don’t allow other people to undervalue you (ie. partnerships and MCNs)
  10. Trust your own interests to be more universal than you assume they are
And finally, the most important thing I was reminded of, is to have empathy and love for yourself. Creating something is hard but it is a little more compassionate when you take care of yourself.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
